A weather front separates two groups of air with different densities which causes different weather phenomenons. They often differ in their temperature and humidity as well. Mountains or warm water can slow or stop fronts.
Cold fronts often move from west to east and are accompanied by thunderstorms, rain and hail. They can also move twice as quickly as warm fronts. On weather maps they are marked by a line of blue triangles.
Warm fronts generally move north to south or south to north and are denser than cold fronts, resulting in slower movement. Rain or fog are common before warm fronts. On weather maps they are marked by a line of red semicircles.
